What’s It Like to Film a Music Video?

I’m usually blogging about travel or lifestyle or concerts, but today, I’m doing a post that deals directly with me. My band, Upon Wings, recently filmed a music video for our upcoming sing, and it’s the first video we have ever done with a professional videographer. It was really interesting!

The biggest part of the video was actually the preparation. I spent forever transforming my unfinished basement into a mysterious space, with Christmas lights, roses and other random decorations. I like how the vibe turned out, and once it got on film, it looked especially cool.

While I’ve heard some bands don’t really sing to their music when recording a video, our videographer had me actually sing along to ever line, and I think the result looks very natural. A lot of it was getting random, different takes, and then it was up to him to do post-production and splice everything together.

I don’t want to give away too much, so let me just say, the experience was interesting and I was delighted with the result! Here are some behind-the-scenes photos from the video shoot. I’ll make sure to post the video when we release it. I’ve been holding the video for a while now, so as long as there are no big surprises, it should be released fairly soon.

Also, it’s worth mentioning that this was my first time filming a music video with someone else involved. I’ve released music videos with my band before, which you can see here, and for those videos, it was really just me figuring out some cool concepts and ideas and enlisting the help of my always-patient mother to help with filming. I’m sure I’ll do some of my own videos again in the future, but having a true professional involved took it to the next level. It simply steps it up to have a real music video professional involved.
